Forgiveness is one of the most powerful, yet most challenging, things we’re called to do as believers. It’s not about letting someone off the hook but rather it’s about freeing ourselves from the weight of bitterness, pain, and resentment. When Jesus taught us to pray, He included: “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors”(Matthew 6:12). That means forgiveness is not optional.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be walking through some Biblical steps for forgiveness. Each step will be grounded in scripture and paired with practical reflection to help you walk this out in real life. Whether you’re dealing with a fresh wound or a pain you’ve carried for years, my prayer is that this journey will help you heal, release, and move forward with freedom.
Step 1: Acknowledge the Hurt
Scripture: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18
Before we can forgive, we have to be honest: someone hurt us. And it’s okay to feel that pain. The Bible doesn’t ignore our suffering, it reminds us that God is near to the brokenhearted. Acknowledging the hurt doesn’t mean we’re weak or holding a grudge. It means we’re human. God wants us to bring that pain to Him, not bury it or pretend it doesn’t exist. Healing begins when we admit what happened and allow God to sit with us in it. Don’t rush past this. God sees. God knows. And God cares!
